As I had written before, the Quebec Government is planning to abolish more than 30 French classes for immigrants, starting next month. According to Yolande James, provincial Minister of Immigration and Cultural Communities, this would save up to $5M for the Public Budget, which is a very “thin” current year. Today the Union of Quebec’s Teachers and the students who are learning French full time (they call this Francisation) went on strike for a couple of hours in front of Mme James Office, in Montreal. They expressed their disagreement with the Government’s decision and wanted back “Le Français écrit”. Here are some pictures from the event, taken by Nelu Birca, student at the first level of French at Montreal University.
